Mechanical Neck and Back Problems
Mechanical neck and back pain is a common medical problem. (Mechanical means the source of the pain may be in the spine, joints, discs, vertebrae, or surrounding soft tissues.) Symptoms of mechanical problems include radiating or localized pain, burning, numbness, tingling, heaviness, and tightness in the neck and/or back.
Physical therapy is an essential part of rehabilitation and can be active or passive in nature.
Active physical therapy is an exercise program requiring home exercise that takes about five minutes to do and does not require special equipment. Active physical therapy can help shorten recovery time and allow a speedy return to work and leisure activities.
Generally prescribed for short-term use only, passive physical therapy produces only short-term symptom relief, not lasting improvement. Passive therapy procedures include massage, ultrasound, diathermy, heat, manipulation, and traction.
