Sports Medicine/Physical Therapy

Sports Medicine/Physical Therapy is the diagnosis and treatment of sports related injuries and encompasses the following elements:

  • Preparation and training
  • Prevention of injuries and illness
  • Diagnosis and treatment of injuries
  • Rehabilitation and return to active participation in sport

Although physical therapists are trained to work with all types of patients, Doeberling-Muccion PT is fortunate to be able to provide evidence-based rehabilitation services from therapists with special skills in sports physical therapy who are integral members of the total health care team.

The Sports Physical Therapy section of the American Physical Therapy Association has identified competencies in the practice of sports PT. They are:

  • The organization and administration of a sports PT service
  • Administration of athletic evaluations
  • Recognition and assessment of athletically related injuries
  • Rendering of acute care
  • Development and direction of conditioning programs
  • Establishment of appropriate goals for athletes with respect to age, sex, skill level, and individual differences
  • Establishment of specific criteria for return to play
  • Skill in taping, wrapping, and the use of assistive support
